I recently found myself with a handful of images in a directory and wishing for a way to go through the set one by one. I usually just use "display" to look at a single image, and that works fine, but I had 8 images and wanted to just show someone one after another without some giant hassle.
It turns out "feh" does the trick, and does it nicely.
It was trivial to install on fedora via "dnf install feh". There is a surprisingly long man page with lots of options that I have yet to investigate. What I do is to "cd dir ; feh" and I get what I want. Left and right arrow keys move forward and backward through the images in the directory.
The following article talks about 4 viewers: feh, mirage, ristretto, and nomacs.
