Here is Barbara Bailey's brown rice for birds recipe,
as posted on the TARA mailing list 11-4-2006:
Lots of people have requested this recipe, so here it is at last:
This is my version so it makes a lot (serves 20+ birds).
You can also make it on your stove.
-
Microwave 1 package of 12 or 15 bean soup mix (with water)
for 45 minutes in a large glass bowl.
Allow to cool, then rinse and drain.
-
Divide cooked bean mix in half, freeze one half.
-
Divide remaining half into 2 large bowls.
-
Add to each bowl:
- 1 package brown rice (I use Mahatma's 28 oz.)
- 1/2 package pearl barley
- 1/2 package split peas
- 3 Tablespoons chili powder
-
Fill bowls with water and microwave for 30 minutes.
-
Add more water along with 1/2 cup dried cranberries (or raisins)
and 1/2 cup or so of dried banana chips to each bowl.
-
Stir mix to get banana chips and cranberries wet.
Add water as needed,
keep stirring until rice is a consistency your birds like.
-
Rinse and drain.
Freeze in appropriate portions; you can use a plastic
ice cube tray for single birds.
