Mosquitos
I have found it worthwhile to carry a bit of mosquito netting to put
over my face while sleeping. This is light and works well for me.
Careful choice of a campsite makes all the difference, and on my last
trip (2009) to the Sierra, there was only one night when mosquitos were
an issue. Not worth hauling a heavy tent with full on bug protection.
Earlier in the year (right after the snowmelt) they can be a much bigger
problem, and are less so at the end of summer and are all but gone in the fall.
Ticks
I have yet to encounter these in the Sierra.
The big worry with ticks is Lyme disease, but as you can see from the following map,
this is really only a big issue in the northeast part of the country.
