How would I preserve the data on my hard drive(s)?
Recently there was some talk about Fedora violating the GPL. This all happened after Fedora was acquired by IBM. I am sure it boils down to "follow the money" along with the fact that IBM has lots of lawyers and might feel very comfortable fighting legal battles.
A number of alternatives suggest themselves (and have been suggested). There is vanilla debian. One might consider Ubuntu, but it is growing bloated and I hear evil things about "snap" packages that make me eager to stay away. SUSE linux is available in different flavors and is a "debian variant". SUSE enterprise seems a lot like CentOS from the Fedora world. It has been recommended that I look at SUSE "LEAP".
