The HP LaserJet III
I was just given two of these (October, 2011) by a nice fellow.
The LaserJet III is HP Model number 33449.
It sold for $2400 in 1990. No postscript built in.
Like the Apple Laserwrite II, these are 300 dpi laser printers,
use the 92295A toner cartridge, and like the Apple Laserwriter II,
has the Canon "SX Engine" inside.
Uses the HP PCL 5 printer language.
This was essentially HP's response to Postscript.
A genuine HP LaserJet 92295A cartridge is said to be good for
4000 pages of normal text. HP no longer makes the 92295A cartridge,
(they discontinued it in November of 2007),
so you are pretty much stuck with remanufactured cartridges, which
vary wildly in quality and performance.
Control Panel
There are two lights (ready and manual), a display, and 8 buttons.
- Online - a toggle to put on and offline.
- Continue/Reset - press to clear a message a place back online.
Hold down till 07 RESET appears to reset the printer.
- Menu - Press to access printing menu, hold down to access configuration menu.
- +/- - move forward and backward through menu settings.
- Formfeed - press when lit to print unprinted data in buffer.
- Print Fonts/Test - press to print pages of fonts
hold down till 05 SELF TEST to print PCL self test.
- Enter/Reset Menu - press to save displayed menu choice
Hold down to 09 MENU RESET to reset all menu choices to defaults.
Service Mode
Hold down online, continue, and enter while powering on the printer.
This yields a blank display. Type continue, then enter, and you are
in service mode. Pressing Menu will display the page count (which will
also be printed on the test mode sheet). My printer shows 34360.
Resources
I have not found any manuals online.
You should look at the Apple LaserWriter II
pages I have, which reference the apple manuals. Since both printers use
the Canon SX engine, the Apple repair manuals are quite relevant.
