My home network - cable modems
From 2013 through 2018, I used a Motorola SB5120.
This is a Docsis 2.0 modem I bought used for about $20.
It has never given me any problems, and still works, but I am
going to upgrade to a Docsis 3.0
Docsis 3.1
Apparently Docsis 3.1 is the new standard in mid 2018.
The recommended unit is a Netgear CM1000 that sells for
about $175. What I am reading though is that you only really need
this is you are wanting to get Gigabit rates, and that even
a Docsis 3.0 modem can go easily 300 Mbit, and even Gigabit.
My current contract is giving me 32 Mbit download and 7 Mbit upload
(measured by the "speedtest" website).
In other words, it seems pointless to spend extra for a Docsis 3.1 modem.
Motorola SB6120
I found one of these used for $20 and ordered it.
This is a Docsis 3.0 unit that is well regarded and has
a reputation for reliability.
It is called a 4x4 modem and some providers (Comcast) are balking
at having these on their network.
It will go to 150 Mbit, so it should be an upgrade to what I have
(since I only expect 30-50 Mbit) and I can wait and see about Docsis 3.1.
