Who made the RP2040 chip on the Pi Pico?

Pardon me for a brief tangent.

The chips for the original Raspberry Pi were made for better or worse, by Broadcomm. Mostly for worse in my opinion. Happily this is not the case for the RP2040.

The RP2040 was designed by the Raspberry Pi foundation, but are fabbed in Taiwan by TSMC. TSMC is "Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation". If you don't know (and few do), TSMC is one of the worlds biggest chip makers. They make chips for iPhones and numerous other products.

Interestingly, the RP2040 was implemented in Verilog and made to run on an FPGA. The RP2040 bootrom was developed using the FPGA.

The RP2040 uses a 40 nm process (compare this to the 5 nm process TSMC uses for iPhone chips). This, in combination with a small overall die size gives a high yield of RP2040 chips.
